In their fifth appearance this year at the 2019 FIVB Club World Championship, Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul will be looking for a repeat of their successes of 2015 and 2016 for their third gold medal. After missing out on a podium finish in 2017, Eczacibasi returned last year for bronze with a 3-0 sweep of Dentil Praia Clube in the third-place playoff.
Founded in 1966, Eczacibasi have been crowned European champions just once, in 2015 - though they also hold a silver (1980) and two bronze (2000 and 2017) Champions League medals. Eczacibasi have also won the European CEV Cup in 1999 and 2018.
This year they made it out of pool play in the Champions League, but were knocked out by Italy's Imoco Volley Conegliano in the quarterfinals after a golden set. They meet Conegliano again on the opening day of pool play at this year's Club World Championship.
Eczacibasi have won the Turkish national title a record 28 times - though not since 2012. This year they finished runners-up to cross-town rivals VakifBank Istanbul after going down 2-3 in wins in the best-of-five final series.
